As it’s world mental health day today, I decided to put together a quick post with easy ways you can take care of yourself. I strongly believe that mental health is just as, if not more important than your physical health but unfortunately, so many people fail to recognise and value the importance of it. I know that many people out there fear talking about their own mental health problems because it is still a taboo subject, which is so disappointing/ frustrating. I mean, it’s 2017 but we still can’t be open about our health problems? That really does say something about our society.
Rather than me complaining and ranting though – trust me, I could go on forever! – here is a list of things you can do to make yourself feel better when you’re having a bad day, not just if you’re suffering from a mental illness.
- Watch your favourite film
Take a break from whatever it is that you are doing and make yourself a cup of tea, hot chocolate or whatever your favourite drink happens to be and get cozy. This should take your mind off things and help you feel more relaxed. Apparently watching comedy can lower your blood pressure?!
- Go for a run or a long walk
Clear your brain from the task on hand. Repetitive work in particular can really exhaust you and going out into the fresh air – even if it is for only half an hour – can make you feel much fresher.
- Turn off your phone and read a good book
… even if it is for the 10th time (Harry Potter!) Have a cup of tea and light a candle too, maybe?
I don’t know why but organising makes me feel like so much more put-together! Take some time to tidy your desk space, reorganise your shelves and workspace to make it a little more exciting. In my mind, a clearer space equates to a clearer brain.
- Make a Pinterest board
Maybe it’s just me but I can genuinely spend hours making Pinterest boards, planning out my life and DIY projects which, let’s be honest, I don’t really have the time to do but I would love to. You could make a board for places you want to visit! Or recipes, life hacks, outfits? The possibilities are endless!
- Bathe, exfoliate, face mask?
Treating yourself never fails to make you feel better
- Donate old clothes to charity
Go through your closet and decide what you don’t need any more and take it into a charity shop. There are so many people out there who would benefit from your belongings.
- Call a friend and talk to them
If you’re feeling down, call a friend that you trust and have a long chat to them. Or maybe catch up with an old friend to take your mind off things
- Write or journal!
Bullet journaling is a great way to organise your life or alternatively, you could write about your feelings and thoughts. Maybe on a blog…? 😉
- Follow my self-care Pinterest board for more ideas!
I have a board full of even more tips for self-care so be sure to give that a follow for more ideas!
I wanted to conclude this post with a gentle reminder to support each other and be there for those people suffering with mental health problems and everyone else too – we could all do with some TLC sometimes. Kindness and compassion go a long, long way.
Is there anything you do to cheer yourself up on a bad day that I haven’t mentioned? Let me know!
